When it was first introduced in 1936, the Chevrolet Carryall Suburban was nothing more than a panel truck with extra windows and seats. It was (and still is) a favorite among ranchers, railroad workers and forest rangers. Sixty years ago, surely no one could have imagined that such a utilitarian device would become the luxury status symbol that it is today. But today's Suburban buyers are educated, affluent, and have active lifestyles that call for a vehicle that combines extraordinary passenger, cargo, and towing capacity. The current version arrived on the scene in 1992, and in February, Chevrolet switched to building 1999s, although the vehicle is unchanged from 1998. While Chevrolet has had this market to itself for many years, Ford's new Expedition offers a challenge to Suburban's dominance.
