BMW's entry-level model is a descendant of the mid-'60s 1600, considered by automotive enthusiasts to be the first compact sedan offering sports car performance. The 3-Series designation first appeared in America in 1977, and the car evolved from a rather boxy shape to its present fluid, aerodynamic design. The current 3-Series was introduced in 1999, initially available in sedan form only. The coupe joins the sedan for 2000, while the convertible goes on sale in March. U.S. sales of the smallest 3-Series, the 318ti, have been discontinued.
